Although the United States has effectively banned horse slaughter within its borders, nearly 30,000 horses are transported from the United States to Mexico and Canada to be killed for their meat every year. What about the UK? The vast majority of the UK public is opposed to the consumption of horses, which is reflected in low horse meat sales. However, these animals continue to suffer in slaughterhouses yearly as their flesh is packaged, shipped and sold abroad. Britain, in fact, is the 8th largest exporter of horse meat in Europe.
