Using drone technology, an Animal Equality investigator filmed the slaughter of salmon and trout on slaughter boats. Our footage from Scottish salmon and trout farms reveals serious welfare issues, including visible overcrowding in the fish farms, fish being violently thrown by workers, fish left to suffocate and fish wounded and bleeding before entering the slaughter machine. Every year in the UK up to 77 million fish are farmed and killed for human consumption. Despite this staggering number, there are currently no species-specific regulations to protect fish at the time of killing. The scientific community has agreed that fish feel pain and joy, like any other animals, and therefore should be given at the very least the same protections. Animal Equality has been investigating the fish industry for years. In February 2021 we released a first-of-its-kind investigation inside a Salmon abattoir operated by The Scottish Salmon Company, now owned by Bakkafrost, showing fish being killed while fully conscious. We've been campaigning ever since for stronger protection for fish, including the implementation of CCTV cameras inside fish slaughterhouses and slaughter boats.
