If we take into account aquatic animals, this number increases to 6.4 billion, according to conservative estimates. The UK claims to have some of the highest animal welfare standards in the world, but how much do we really know about how these laws are enforced, or even if they are enforced at all? The current enforcement system in the UK is extremely chaotic and disorderly. It is made up of over 180 taxpayer-funded bodies responsible for ensuring that the laws that are in place are properly monitored and properly enforced. The fragmented nature of the enforcement system in the UK contributes towards the major problem we now face: a lack of accountability and continuity. And animals are paying the price.
